Understanding formula stages

Start with the product name and age statement. Stage numbers alone do not tell the whole story.

General information for parents and carers. For advice about your baby’s feeding needs, speak with your doctor, child health nurse or dietitian.

Read the age statement first

Infant formula is designed for healthy infants from birth. Follow-on formula is intended for infants from six months as part of a varied diet. Do not use follow-on formula for a baby under six months.

Stage two is optional

A six-month birthday does not automatically mean a baby needs to change formula. FSANZ describes moving to follow-on formula as optional. Ask your healthcare professional if you are unsure what is suitable.

Specialised needs need individual advice

Products for special medical purposes are intended for medically diagnosed needs and require medical supervision. Marketing descriptions, stage numbers and a price comparison cannot establish that a product is right for an individual baby.

Before choosing or changing formula, discuss your baby's needs with a doctor, child health nurse or dietitian.
