Knowing your product
A guide to the formula label
The useful details to check before you open a container, and whenever packaging changes.
2 min read
General information for parents and carers. For advice about your baby’s feeding needs, speak with your doctor, child health nurse or dietitian.
Name, age and ingredients
Look for the product's full name and age guidance, then read the ingredient list and allergen information. Product colours and stage numbers are helpful identifiers, but they do not replace the written information.
Directions matter
Locate the preparation and storage directions, date mark and warnings. Check these even if the container looks familiar. Keep the original label available so that directions and batch details can be referred to later.
Packaging is changing
Australia's updated infant formula labelling rules are in a transition period. Manufacturers have until 13 September 2029 to make the relevant changes, so you may see different label layouts during that time.
If a product's age guidance, ingredients or instructions are unclear, ask the supplier or a healthcare professional before using it. A product page is useful for browsing; the container provides the instructions for the product in your hands.
